This is the single version of UTU’s “Calm Way to Go”, the final version sounds a bit different since it is mastered with full analog equipment. I will post the new version, when we get the album released.

I did all the recording, editing, mixing and fixing, except three tracks of upright bass. I also play the guitar alongside some various instruments.

Ok, this was an interesting read but I’m really disappointed there is no Jean-Michel Jarre, Edgar Varese, Oscar Sala or even Kraftwerk mentioned on this one!!! Also the “fact” provided here is you can’t go wrong with a layered sawtooth sound with some detuning and reverb.. How dull is that? There are so many options with other waveforms and techniques (frequency modulation for instance), it is a grief this article mainly focuses on praising just the sawtooth, squarewave and layering samples on top of other, playing around with cutoff and resonance.

Where is Rick Wakeman? Where are other supercool 70’s italo proge sounds and Ennio Morricones synthlines??

I got really inspired by Gary Numan’s work though, never before had I really listened his songs, just the one’s remixed by some ripoffs..

Also the instructions how to construct your own sounds were a bit off in my opinion.. For instance the Kernkraft 4000 song, I think the bassline and the lead sound are played with the very same synth, at the same time.

Maybe I’ll make my own list of 40 of my favourite synth sounds.

I found a vintage volume pedal from local flea market. The make is EKO Crescendo, it seems to have a broken potentiometer, have to fix it soon. The action is smooth, the casing is at least as good as in my good’ol’ Jim Dunlop Crybaby, condition is near mint. Can’t wait to have it on my setup.

Sunday morning in studio

I’m sitting at the studio with my dog. I’m rendering some mixdowns for German punk-band Kapelle Vorwärts’ forthcoming album. They wanted Mr. Säärelä from Flags of Unity to do some Finnish vocals for their song “Dem Morgenrot entgegen”. We did the Recordings on Friday.

On Friday we also worked on Midget in the Sink’s new album. We managed to create an ultimate brainmelting bass and guitar sound combination. I’ll upload some, when we get the vocals done.

I’m also mixing down some UTU -tracks. A couple of guys from Voionmaa School of Arts wanted to use UTU’s song in their final project, a short movie. They wanted all the tracks separately, so that’s what I’m doing now, I hope they upload their project to Youtube or something.. I want to see the results!

Death Metal in Tampere part 3

Sunday was the day for lead guitarist to show up. Well he did, half an hour late, quite smacked. I set up the rig for him and reminded him not to leave the Crybaby on in between solos, for it causes static, horrible noise and editing grief (those noises are pretty hard to get rid of). I left JVM do the recording, because I had a date with my dog in a forest.

Yesterday I got back to editing. I pressed play and what did I hear? FUCKING CRYBABY STATIC ALL OVER THE GUITAR SOLO TRACKS.

Perkele.

Well it means more editing, but it’s not impossible.

We phoned the vocalist to come sing the songs. He did his parts with no problems in just two hours. JVM did the “press the button” work again; I saw the neighbour across the street throwing some perfectly good isolation / insulation material away to the garbage pile. Immediately I ran outside and asked if I could have those leftovers. He said ok and now we have the isolation material we were lacking from the monitoring room.

After bringing the isolation boards in, we did some doubling takes for the lead vocals and we were done. Now it’s all about mixing the whole lot together.. I quess we’ll be done by Thursday!

Death metal in Tampere part 2

Its Saturday I guess.. Just opened a bottle of cheap red wine after eight hours of bass and rhythm guitars for the death metal youngsters of west-Tampere, and…

IT WENT WELL!!!

The bass player did all the bass tracks for the six tracks on almost one sitting. We managed to achieve a good sound using just the ESP:s own mic preamps, a Boss Bass Overdrive, Bass Crybaby and a tube preamp. A little of compression and eq applied and boom we were ready to move on to the rhythm guitars. First I was afraid, then I wasn’t even petrified, the guy did two takes of all the guitar tracks just like snapping his fingers! Good shit, man. Tomorrow it is time for some lead guitars and mixing.Maybe I’ll even have time to record something with Petra of UTU (we need to fix some vocals for the UTU album)

Oh and by the way, it seems to be very useful to go play a free (not free for us, you know “artist pays”) gig at Helsinki Music House (funded by the tax payers), since we got a fan from Algeria. And he wasn’t even on location.. Just for the laughs I signed to chatroulette when we were doing the soundcheck and someone actually paid attention to what we were doing. After soundcheck I chatted with him for a while and he joined our Facebook site, commenting every other picture and sending comments about our tracks at bandcamp. I thought the place was completely full of wankers, but this one guy made the exception. Maybe I’ll air more stuff to Chatroulette some day. I’ll inform when I do.

And what about this “Artist Pays” - thingy?? Well it is the common concept of arranging gigs in Finland; everyone seems to think the artists don’t have to pay for gasoline, food, drinks, instruments, rehearsal space or actually anything, so no-one has to pay the artists anything either. So there we were in one of the “coolest” places in Helsinki to play a gig, in front of quite a big crowd, after driving 180km from Tampere (soon to be driving the same way back in the darkness), NOT EVEN GETTING ONE CUP OF COFFEE FOR SALARY. Thank you guys.

Well the sound engineer was actually one of the best I’ve ever met, so hail to you, whatever your name was, keep it up!
